Accelerated growth of freshwater fish during anthropogenic eutrophication has been attributed almost exclusively to the increased nutrient content, while density-dependent effects have been largely neglected. We evaluated the relative importance of these factors by studying the growth of 43 consecutive year classes of common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) from Upper Lake Constance. This prealpine lake underwent eutrophication from the 1950s to 1970s, followed by reoligotrophication. Because whitefish are harvested with gill nets in a strongly size-selective way, we used back-calculated lengths of average fast-growing fish to compare growth among cohorts. Standing stock biomass was estimated based upon virtual year-class strengths. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that growth of whitefish during their second year was most strongly related to standing stock biomass followed by PO4-P content during spring turnover and by calendar year, which was incorporated as a third independent variable (adjusted R2 = 0.84). The negative correlation between whitefish growth rate and calendar year is interpreted as evidence of an evolutionary response to the highly size-selective fishery during at least four decades. We conclude that density-dependent effects on whitefish growth are more important than had been realized previously and that the impact of eutrophication on growth of whitefish needs to be reconsidered. Does water calcium content influence the distinctness of daily growth increments in the otoliths of larval whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.)?

In larval and juvenile whitefish (Coregonus /avaretlls L.) from Lake Constance, Germany, the otolith increments are deposited daily, whereas daily deposition could not be confirmed in larval whitefish from Lake Pyhaselka, Finland. The calcium concentration in Lake Constance is high (around 1.3 mM), while calcium deficiency is typical for Finnish lakes (around 0.15 mM). Therefore, the hypothesis...

The Influence of Photoperiod and Feeding Frequency on the Distinctness of Daily Otolith Increments in Larval Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.)

It has been observed earlier that in larval and juvenile whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) from Lake Constance, Germany, otolith increments are deposited daily, whereas daily deposition could not be confirmed in larval whitefish from Lake Pyh~iselka, Finland. In these studies, Lake Constance whitefish experienced 12 to 14 hours light per day, while light intensity in Finnish lakes was under 100 l...

Reproduction vs. growth: indications for altered energy fluxes in Lake Constance whitefish through size-selective fishery

Fisheries-induced evolution (FIE) has been reported for several intensively exploited fish stocks worldwide. Most studies focused on marine populations of high commercial interest , but FlE may also occur in intensively harvested fTesh water fish stocks. An example is the whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) stock of Lake Constance. Previous evidence for FlE in this stock, tllrough tile analysis of ...

Human-induced changes in the reproductive traits of Lake Constance common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus).

Size-selective fishery harvest leads to phenotypic changes in fish reproductive traits. When these changes represent an evolutionary response of a stock, they may have severe consequences for future stock dynamics and yields. In freshwater ecosystems, reproductive traits may also be affected by other human impacts such as changes in system productivity. The present study uses regression analysi...

Origins of carbon sustaining the growth of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus early larval stages in Lake Annecy: insights from fatty-acid biomarkers.

The hypothesis that diatom carbon (C) produced during the spring peak supported spring zooplankton production and, ultimately, the growth of Coregonus lavaretus early larval stages from March to May 2006 in Lake Annecy, France, was tested using gut content analyses and fatty acid biomarkers. Gut content results showed that C. lavaretus larvae from stages 1 to 4 preferentially fed on copepods wi...
